Interactive technology offers new opportunities for exploring, and revealing regional geology to both science and non-science persons.
Integrating technology into with learning, as well as the tourism field, offers new opportunities in the digital design. Creating fun learning experiences holds the key to inspiring, fueling, and offering new opportunities for outdoor adventure and knowledge building.
The goal of this thesis is to provide interactive media which allows both young and old residents and tourists to explore the rock layers, lake formation, and glaciers related to the Finger Lakes with special focus on Canandaigua Lake. The project will also incorporate information design and print media to enhance the experience.
The key points to be investigated and applied to this project include research regarding the historical geology of the Finger Lakes as it pertains to the lake formation, particularly glaciers. Research also will include feedback from local geologists, as well as outdoor enthusiasts. The final solution will be a design system that incorporates interactive media, a website and print media, infographic posters, as well as QR codes for Augmented Reality interactions. Overall the design system will offer a unique outdoor experience which will inspire both science and non-science persons to explore the current physical landscape of the Finger Lakes.
