A variety of recreational activities such as boating, ice fishing, wind sailing, kayaking all happen on Canandaigua Lake. But a majority of the people are not really aware of the amazing force of nature that created the lake. If one had the opportunity to take Earth Science in school then they might be fortunate enough to have gotten a taste of how the glaciers formed the Finger Lakes Region. But a majority of persons just play on, in, and around the lakes without considering what it took to actually form the lakes. The glaciers that created this magnificent landscape ultimately define this region’s identity. The landscape from the lake to the hills has helped to make this a wonderful, natural playground. Knowing how the glaciers formed the lakes, particularly Canandaigua Lake and surrounding hills will enhance the experience of a visit to Canandaigua.
Today one can walk around the lake but the interaction with the environment offer only a glimmer of the geological history. This thesis addresses this problem; it puts forth the idea that design can promote people to interact with their environment on a different level. People, both residents and tourists can experience learning in conjunction with physical activity as they understand the Finger Lakes and the amazing force that created these beautiful lakes.
